Ahead of official-level consultations in Washington on the Indo-American nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said it was for the United States to decide on taking the agreement forward.
"It is for the US administration to decide. The matter is with the US Congress," Dr Singh said when asked whether Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran is visiting the US to drum up support for the passing of the nuclear deal.
The prime minister said the foreign secretary was on a "normal visit" to the US.
Saran is in Washington from Wednesday seeking to clear the doubts several American lawmakers have with regard to the deal. He will also hold talks with Bush administration officials.
Saran will meet Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns to discuss further steps in civil nuclear cooperation.
India's impeccable record on non-proliferation front is expected to be highlighted by the foreign secretary who is visiting the US at a time when the American Congress is debating a legislation to allow trade with India in nuclear technology.
