The Election Commission will use new electronic voting machines in all the polling centres during the forthcoming two-phase polls in Assam to ensure that there is no rigging.

State's Chief Electoral Officer J P Prakash said on Monday that all old EVMs in the state have been changed.

More than 23,000 EVMs, all manufactured after 1999, will be used during the polls.

Electronics Corporation of India Limited will supply the machines.

ECIL engineers have tested and certified all the EVMs and they have been sent to the district collection officers.

Later, in each district, eight trained officials will fit the machines with ballot papers in the presence of ECIL engineers, the CEO said.

It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to fit each machine with the ballot papers and the entire process will take about two days to be completed.

Referring to the security measures around the polling stations, Prakash said the state government has drawn up a security plan wherein the emphasis is more on static forces around the polling station.

''There will be mobile forces but the emphasis is more on sufficient static forces so that there will be no need to call in additional forces if required," Prakash added.
