Accusing the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam of carrying on a 'mischievous campaign' against him on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday said he wanted an amicable solution to the issue so that violence did not raise its ugly head in that nation and on Indian soil.
In a statement in Chennai, Karunanidhi said that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, along with its allies, would prevail upon the Centre to take steps to end the ethnic strife in the island republic amicably.
"We will not have any narrow approach to the issue and want an amicable solution. We are heartbroken over the influx of Tamil refugess and will provide all help to them. The peace talks should bring about an amicable end to the Sri Lankan Tamil problem," he said.
The chief minister said the DMK had evolved its stand on the issue, 'with emphasis on the sentiments of the Tamil race and on humanatarian grounds'. "But there had been attempts by the AIADMK to malign the DMK before the world Tamil community as that party could not return to power in the state," he said.
"I strongly condemn this mischievous propaganda (that DMK was betraying Sri Lankan Tamils)", he said.
