Breaking her long silence on the drug abuse case involving Rahul Mahajan, his sister Poonam on Wednesday denied her brother was a drug addict and reposed faith in Bharatiya Janata Party, saying the party had stood by them in their hour of crisis.
Waiting for her brother to come out of Tihar jail, where he had been lodged for more than a week, after a court granted him bail, Poonam said, "My brother is innocent. He has never taken drugs. We all are depressed because of what happened to our father (slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan). We are happy and relieved to hear that he (Rahul) has got bail," she told reporters at the official residence of Pramod Mahajan at 7, Safadarjung Road.
Poonam rebutted reports of BJP distancing itself from the Mahajan family during the crisis, saying, "The BJP has fully supported us. It is our family. BJP is in our blood."
Poonam declined to write off the political career of Rahul following the drug abuse case and said, "You cannot say whether his future in politics is spoilt or not. Let him come back and speak to us and then we will decide."
"Me and my other family members just want to see him now. There was delay in getting bail as the police was harassing him and putting him under pressure," Poonam said adding, "we have full faith in the judiciary and will fight out the case and he will be proved innocent."
Reacting to remarks of her jailed uncle Pravin, accused of killing her father, on Rahul being spoilt, she said, "He is an accused and I don't want to comment on his remarks. We will ensure that he gets the maximum punishment for his crime."
