Maintaining that the Bharatiya Janata Party can only provide 'emotional support' to Rahul Mahajan, currently embroiled in a drug abuse case, party president Rajnath Singh has said his political future will depend on the outcome of police investigations.
"The police are investigating the matter. When the findings are revealed, only then will I be able to answer the question about Rahul's future," Singh told NDTV. He was asked whether the BJP's doors were still open for the late Pramod Mahajan's son.
"Please tell me what role can the party when the police are looking into the matter? And why should the BJP be linked to the personal issues of any leader? Nobody should expect it from the party," he said.
The BJP has been under attack from some quarters for 'deserting' the Mahajan family in the wake of the recent episode. After BJP patriarch Atal Bihari Vajpayee expressed sympathy towards Rahul Mahajan, some party leaders, including Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, visited him while he was in police custody.
