Ninteen naxalites were killed and five arrested in two separate encounters in north and south of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, police said.

Ten naxalites were killed and five were captured alive, including two women rebels, from Dewapalli area of Dantewada district, about 550 km from the state capital in a shoot out, police sources told PTI in Raipur.

Police also foiled naxalites' attempt to abduct about 40 villagers, the sources said adding on information that the naxalites are forcibly taking the Dewapalli villagers with them, police traced the ultras and asked them to surrender, but they fired on the security forces.

Five injured naxalites were arrested after the shootout but the villagers told the police that ten bodies were dragged away by the ultras.

Four landmines were also recovered along with other explosive materials.

In another incident in Chando police station area of Balrampur police district, about 525 km from the state capital, on information of the movement of a large group of armed naxalites, police cordoned off an area near Jalbotha village and asked them to surrender.

But the ultras opened fire on police and nine naxalites were killed in the gun battle.

The security forces recovered the bodies of three ultras and seized five weapons, including one self loaded rifle and two .303 rifles, the sources said.
