Chairman of the breakaway faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Wednesday taken into
preventive custody as he was heading towards Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir to address a gathering, official sources said.
Geelani, who was scheduled to address a congregation at Mandi, Surankote and Mendhar towns, was taken into custody in the outskirts of Poonch town, 230 km from Srinagar, they said.
The firebrand separatist leader arrived in Jammu on June 1 on a week-long visit to border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
He was taken to the police station and would be released in the evening, sources said.
