A nation's prayers save Prince

July 24, 2006
A collective sigh of relief settled across India on Sunday evening when six-year old Prince Kumar was rescued from a 55-feet borewell shaft in Aldeharhi village, Kurukshetra, Haryana, after a 50-hour ordeal that extended to his birthday. The rescue operation, carried out by the Indian army, played out live over television.

On Friday evening Prince fell into the hole dug for irrigation purposes. The shaft, covered with an empty jute bag, was just wide enough for the boy to go in but too narrow for an adult.

The local administration and villagers tried pulling him out but finally had to seek the Indian's army help.
