Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed Shashi Tharoor's candidature for the United Nations seccretary general's post with United States President George W Bush at their meeting in St Petersburg on Monday.

President Bush said the US would certainly given Dr Tharoor's nomination its careful consideration.

Dr Tharoor, currently a UN under secretary general, is India's nominee to succeed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Dr Singh also discussed Dr Tharoor's candidature with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her country would certainly consider it.

The prime minister also discussed UN reform with Dr Merkel. India and Germany are part of the G-4 initiative for reform of the Security Council. The G4 -- India, Brazil, Germany and Japan -- want to be members of the UN Security Council

Both Dr Singh and Dr Merkel agreed that even though not much progress had been made in getting the framework resolution through the UN General Assembly, it was very important that while other aspects of UN reform were being looked at, the UN must not lose sight of Security Council reform in particular.

That is, ensuring that there is expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent category of members on the Security Council.

Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said India welcomed the fact that there will soon be a debate in the UN General Assembly on UN reforms, and there would be a specific review on Security Council reforms.
