"But for that she must keep aside all undue demands," he told reporters in Siliguri. Banerjee, whose health deteriorated as her fast entered its 25th day on Thursday, insists that land that was "forcibly acquired" for the Tata Motors' small car plant at Singur be returned to farmers.
Bhattacharjee, speaking at a function on the second day of the biennial national conference of the All India Lawyers' Union in Siliguri, stressed on the setting up of a national commission for accountability of judges.
"All others -- professionals and even politicians -- have accountability except the judges in the existing system. This is not fair," he said, noting that he was the first to raise this issue at a recent conference in Delhi but was opposed by judges.
Though the proposal was still being considered by the Centre, the United Progressive Alliance government is taking time as it is gauging whether the decision will help the major political party (Congress) in power, he said.
