The worst-affected areas like Rander, Adajan and Katargam were still submerged and lakhs of people living in these areas are still facing problems in procuring food and water and essential items like milk and medicines. Communication networks and power supply are still affected in several areas, officials said.
"As the water outflow went down to 3.93 lakh cusec, the flood waters have receded in many areas in the last 12 hours. If good weather prevails in catchments of Ukai dam water will recede from the city by Friday night," district collector Vatsala Vasudevan told PTI.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has postponed his visit to Surat till evening due to bad weather. Control Room sources said the inflow of water in Ukai dam is just 2.95 lakh cusecs of water while the outflow is 3.93 lakh cusec and the level of dam is 343 feet, two feet below the danger mark.
On Thursday night, an angry mob burnt furniture of a hospital of Surat for delay in providing treatment to those affected by flood, officials said. However, situation was brought under control by police, they added.
