Leader of the Opposition Lal Kishenchand Advani Saturday night telephoned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urged him to end the stalemate over raising of the height of the Narmada dam.
He reminded him that both the Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat were united on the issue.
Advani, in Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh as part of his Bharat Suraksha Yatra, urged Dr Singh "to show leadership" qualities and said "you alone have to decide at the earliest".
Party sources said the senior BJP leader told the prime minister that it would be a sad day if the Gujarat chief minister was forced to go on a hunger strike protesting any move to stall work on the Sardar Sarovar project.
The prime minister mentioned that the opinion at the meeting of the review committee of the Narmada Control Authority earlier in the day was divided to which Advani responded that chief ministers of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were unanimous in seeking construction of the dam up to the height permitted by the Supreme Court.
