Claiming that supply of rice at Rs 2 per kilogram via the public distribution system and supply of free television sets to the people was feasible, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday assured that the party will keep its poll promises if voted to power in the May 8 Assembly polls.
'The moment the DMK is voted to back to power, the poll promises will be kept,' party president M Karunanidhi said in a press release.
He said rice was presently being supplied at subsidised rates in the public distribution system. If the subsidy levels were increased further, then rice could be supplied at the stated rate, he said.
On supply of free televisions, he said he would explain it in detail at an election public meeting on April 5.
He said the criticism was borne out of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's 'fear' that they would be routed in the polls.
Ridiculing the AIADMK chief and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's claims of her government's achievements, Karunanidhi said it was this government that had done away with the Uzhavar Santhai (Farmers' market) concept, successfully implemented by his government.
He claimed that over 16 lakh farmers and 5.4 crore consumers had benefited through the concept, which was abolished by the Jayalalithaa government. 'The people will clearly understand this,' he said.
The AIADMK government had attempted to do away with the free power scheme, but beat a hasty retreat only because the DMK and other parties threatened to launch an agitation, he said.
Regarding the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi said the less said about it, the better. 'The police are more busy making arrangements for Jayalalithaa's visits to different districts as part of her poll campaign.'
