The West Bengal government Thursday said the flood situation in coastal districts was improving with water receding in the affected east and west Midnapore districts though the general alert was still in place in view of the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Medical teams were rushed to the region to tackle exigencies like post-flood outbreak of gastro-enteric diseases, Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said.
Dasgupta said the Public Works and Irrigation Departments had sought Rs 1,600 crore and Rs 33 crore respectively from the Finance Department for repair of roads and dams.
"This proposal will be discussed with the individual departments and work should begin in early November," he said.
Over 3,700 tonnes of food and 95,000 pieces of tarpaulin sheets had been sent for the flood victims, he said.
Nearly 30 lakh people have been marooned and 1.20 lakh houses partly damaged.
