A school boy riding a motorcycle was killed and his pillion rider injured Friday when police allegedly opened fire on them for not stopping at a barricade near here.

Class 10 student Nishu Kumar, with a relative Rakesh Sharma, failed to stop at the barricade in Domana on the outskirts of town following which a policeman posted there allegedly opened fire, officials said.

Nishu died on the spot while Sharma and a jawan were critically injured and rushed to hospital, they said.

The incident led to an impromptu protest with locals of the area blocking traffic on Jammu-Poonch highway at Domana.

Senior police officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police Basant Kumar, rushed to the spot.

As per the statement of police constable Satpal, they were directed by the ASP to open fire in case the vehicles entering Jammu did not stop at the barricade.

He said the school boy "did not have a helmet on and tried to escape" possibly to evade a traffic fine.
