The release of top United Liberation Front of Asom leaders from various jails in India and Bangladesh figured in Wednesday's talks between the ULFA-selected People's Consultative Group and National Security Advisor M K Narayanan.
"The PCG raised the issue of releasing top ULFA leaders lodged in jails of Assam and Bangladesh," noted author and mediator of the peace talks Indira Goswami told PTI.
"They (ULFA) have been demanding the release of their leaders to convene a central committee meeting which is important for them to take decisions on the peace initiative," Goswami said adding, the issue would be discussed in the next round of talks with Home Ministry officials.
Nine top central committee members of the banned outfit, including general secretary Anup Chetia and vice chairman Pradip Gogoi, are presently lodged in various jails.
During the meeting, the PCG submitted a memorandum to Narayanan in which ULFA's demands for withdrawal of army from Assam and the sovereignty issue also figured, she said.
Goswami said the dates of next round of talks between PCG and Home Ministry would be finalised in two to three days.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who attended the historic meeting, said he was willing to discuss "all issues bothering" Assam, but within the framework of the Constitution.
