As many as 1,111 persons, including 171 minors and 581 women, kidnapped in Bihar since 1995, still remained untraced, Bihar Director-General of Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha told the Patna high court on Tuesday.
'This is shameful. Our conscience is shattered on coming to know that there are people who are in captivity for the past one decade,' a division bench comprising Chief Justice J N Bhatt and Justice R N Prasad observed.
The judges ordered the DGP to provide more comprehensive information by November 10 regarding the cases under investigation and in which charge sheets have been filed to enable the court to issue necessary directions in this regard.
The bench also directed the police chief to provide information as to in how many cases inter-state criminal gangs were involved and also about direct or indirect involvement of influential persons.
The figures provided by the DGP to the court in an affidavit revealed that the oldest unsolved kidnapping case was that from Purnea district dating back to October 10, 1995.
The court said it intended to cure Bihar of this menace and instructed the DGP to come up with a concrete plan on next date of hearing on November 10 on how to bring down the rise in cases of kidnapping in the state.
