The Opposition National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir described the first instalment of Rs 40,000 being provided by Jammu and Kashmir government to the homeless victims of earthquake as a joke, on Friday.

The party said that even Rs 2 lakh was not sufficient for raising the structure. "It is great injustice and a joke to the victims that government is paying Rs 40,000 to those whose houses have been damaged in the quake," NC president Omar Abdullah told reporters.

He said the cost of building material had escalated and this amount was not enough to raise a basic building.

NC legislators from Kupwara, Mir Saifullah, Khalif-ur-Rehman, Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, Shariefuddin Shariq and former minister Mohammad Shafi Uri, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan and member of Lok Sabha Abdul Rashid Shaheen, in a joint statement, said 80 percent of the affected people were not provided relief in Kupwara.
