An unidentified militant was killed and two security personnel injured as a fierce gunbattle broke out near the office of municipal council in Sopore township of Baramulla district on Friday, official sources said.
Two militants, reportedly wearing army uniforms, tried to gain entry into the office of the municipal council at Kraliteng in Sopore, 55 kms from Srinagar, by opening fire from their automatic weapons.
However, the Central Reserve Police Force guards posted there opened fire, foiling the ultras' plan. The militants were also confronted by the road-opening parties of Border Security Force and Rashtriya Rifles, the sources said.
They said the militants were asked to stop and surrender, but they opened fire and, in the ensuing shootout, an unidentified militant was killed and two security personnel - Constable Deepak Kumar of BSF and a jawan of 22 Rashtriya Rifles - were injured.
The sources said another militant took shelter in a nearby area and continued firing on the search parties. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and efforts are on to neutralise the militant, the sources said.
