Jolted by the recent incidents where Mumbai Police personnel hallegedly raped minors, Mumbai Police has decided to identify 'potential trouble-makers' and take strict steps against them.
"We plan to initiate some steps like not allowing such people to work alone and instead joining them in teams so that others can keep watch on them," city Joint Police Commissioner (administration) Subhash Awate said on Tuesday.
These steps include punitive action against those who have already defaulted, besides keeping a close watch on potential troublemakers, Awate said.
He added that strong action will be taken against policemen noticed consuming alcohol, or drifting from their duties.
"We also want to convey to lower rung policemen that the responsibility for such incidents does not rest on senior officials alone...even they have the responsibility to share and therefore should pass on information about trouble-makers to superiors," Awate said.
He said the Mumbai police would like to further activate reporting channels where in policemen can alert about impending trouble and help in taking corrective steps.
Awate said apart from disciplinary action, police also plans to hold counselling sessions for the force.
The Mumbai police force has run into controversy with one of its constables booked for raping a minor at Sahar in west Mumbai. The incident has come less than a year after another policeman was held for raping a minor inside a police outpost south Mumbai.
