Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday demanded the resignation of film star Govinda from his Lok Sabha seat in the wake of the footage shown by a television channel on Wednesday night in which the Congress member of Parliament was shown in the company of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim during a shop opening function in Dubai.

Govinda, in his reaction, had accused Samajvadi Party leader Amar Singh of hatching a conspiracy against him and questioned the timing of the footage broadcast.

"We demand that Govinda should own up the responsibility and resign from his seat in the Lok Sabha. We want to know what action the Congress president Mrs Sonia Gandhi intends to take against Govinda who has been shown in the company of most wanted criminal." party spokesperson Prakash Javdekar told rediff.com.

Reminding the Congress chief that even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had, during his recent visit to the US and talks with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, raised the issue of Dawood, Javadekar said, "it (the video tape) is a sensational revelation and now action must follow."

He said that the police should register FIR against the cinestar turned politician and arrest him immediately and investigate the matter further.

"This is a serious issue and the law must take its own course," he added.
