A police inspector allegedly shot at a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, prompting a crowd to surround a police station and call for a bandh in Pichhor near Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Police Inspector Sunil Kushwah, allegedly in an inebriated condition, shot at BJP leader Manoj Pathak with his service revolver following a dispute over downing of shutters of a pan kiosk at the bus stand late on Wednesday night, police said.

Pathak was rushed to a hospital in Gwalior in a critical condition, they said.

Angered by the attack, Pathak's supporters surrounded the Pichhore police station and demanded the immediate arrest of Kushwah and constables Sunil Soni and Jitendra Verma, who were accompanying him when the incident took place, police said.

The matter subsided after senior officers rushed to the spot and a case was registered against the inspector and constables who were yet to be arrested, they said.

Meanwhile, shops remained closed in Pichhor in protest against the attack on Pathak, while security has been upgraded to avert any untoward incident, police said.
