Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said the devastation caused by the killer earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir will be treated as a national calamity.

Addressing a press conference in Srinagar after touring the worst hit areas of Uri and Tangdhar, he said the Centre and and the entire country was behind the people of Jammu and Kashmir in this "hour of sorrow and grief" and will do everything to overcome the "crisis".

The prime minister, who announced an additional relief of Rs 500 crore after witnessing the "magnitude" of the calamity, said "money will not be a constraint in meeting all legitimate needs" of the affected people.

"We will put the best foot forward to meet the needs of all the affected people, particularly the orphans, widows and senior citizens," Dr Singh said.
