Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday assured Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian national on death row in Pakistan, that she will personally take up his case with President Pervez Musharraf.
"Soniaji was all sympathy when we met her and gave us the assurance that she will talk to Musharraf herself about my brother," Dalbir said after meeting the Congress chief.
She said Sonia also gave her the assurance that she will talk to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh about providing free education to Sarabjit's daughters.
"She said the Indian government was making all efforts to secure the release of my brother and said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will also talk to Musharraf for my brother," Dalbir said.
Dalbir is in Delhi to secure visa for her and her husband to go to Pakistan to meet Sarabjit.
She said her brother had strayed into Pakistan under the influence of alcohol and the blasts he had been charged with carrying out had taken place before he went across the border.
Dalbir had an appointment with Sonia, but could not meet her as she was busy, Congress sources said.
Dalbir was a member of the Congress party for the past 15 years, but crossed over to BJP a couple of months ago.
