The Communist Party of India-Marxist on Saturday accused the Manmohan Singh government of straining India's relation with other countries under pressure from the United States, which wants India 'to be it's junior partner'.

CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat asked the government to assure that it would not allow the Iran nuclear issue to be raised in the UN Security Council.

He also asked the government to spell out its stand on the voting on the Iran nuclear issue at the IAEA board meeting next month.

"India should not line up with the US and take stand with it in the next meeting of the IAEA board. India must make its stand clear on what it is going to do when the final decision will be taken on the Iran issue," he said.

"We are going to launch a countrywide campaign against the US designs in oil-rich Iran and demanding that India assert itself and follow an independent foreign policy," he said.

The CPI-M leader accused the UPA government of deviating from its promise in the Common Minimum Programme of pursuing an independent foreign policy.
