Deepinder Singh Hooda on Saturday improved upon his father Bhupinder Singh Hooda's victory margin by retaining the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat for the Congress by a margin of 2,32,098 votes, as compared to the 1,50,435 vote margin the Haryana Chief Minister recorded in the 2004 LS polls.

Deepinder, who polled 3,55,230 votes, defeated Abhimanyu of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Om Parkash Chautala-led Indian National Lok Dal nominee Balwan Singh Suhag finished a poor third getting 36,980 votes in a contest, which also had 12 others in fray.

With Congress retaining Rohtak, the party position in the state remains the same as in 2004 -- the Congress with nine LS seats and the BJP with one.

Deepinder has got a share of 3,55,230 votes as against 3,24,235 votes which were secured by Hooda senior over a year back.

The son surpassed his father's record even though the polling percentage was only around 50 pc of the 10.65 lakh voters as compared to the 67 per cent polling when Bhupinder Singh Hooda contested from Rohtak in 2004.

BJP nominee Abhimanyu, who had recorded 1,73,800 votes in the 2004 LS elections, lost around half-a-lakh votes this time. He polled 1,23,132 votes.

INLD candidate Suhag also lost ground substantially, losing around 69,000 votes. He got 36,980 votes as against the 105,640 votes he secured in 2004.

The by-election in Rohtak was necessitated due to the resignation of the now Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who quit the LS seat following his election to the state legislature from the Kiloi assembly constituency early this year.
