The Centre will depute another team to Tamil Nadu to assess the damage caused following a fresh spell of rains lashing the state. The announcement was made by Union Road Transport and Shipping minister T R Baalu on Saturday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given an assurance in this regard when MPs from Tamil Nadu met him in Delhi on Friday, Baalu, who also accompanied them, told reporters.

Last week, the Centre had deputed a team to assess the damages due to rains in October. But after their visit, a fresh spell of heavy rains has caused extensive damage all over the state.

Baalu said a comprehensive scheme would be prepared to prevent water stagnation along the runway at Chennai airport. He said the National Highways Authority of India was taking steps to close breaches in at least four places on the national highways in the state.
