In an indication that the extradition of underworld don Abu Salem's first wife would not be an easy affair for India, United States Monday said it did not send people for questioning, as enough evidence is required in order to arrest and bring charges against a person who is free and not in custody.

"If it is a case of extradition of someone who's free and not in custody, you've basically got to decide there is enough evidence to arrest this person and bring charges. You don't extradite people for questioning," a senior US administration official said, when asked about the possibility of extraditing Samira Jumani.

The official who wished to remain anonymous refused to comment about reports in a section of the media that India was seeking extradition of Jumani, saying he would not even confirm or deny it, as it would prejudice any ongoing legal case. "If there had been a request (for extradition), I couldn't say anything about it," the official told PTI.
