The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over the mushrooming of commercial activities in residential areas of New Delhi in violation of Delhi Master Plan.

The court asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to submit a list of areas where such violation was rampant.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabhharwal asked the MCD to submit a zone-wise list by Monday and said it will hear the matter further.

Favouring action against commercial use of residential properties in a phased manner, the bench said areas with blatant violation of building by-laws and the master plan should be taken first.

Residential areas where commercial activities started recently should be taken up before mixed user areas like Lajpat Nagar and Karol Bagh, the bench observed.

The court made it clear that it intended to appoint officers from MCD and Delhi Police to ensure strict compliance of its order in this regard. The officials would be responsible to none but the court, it said.

Pulling up MCD for rampant misuse of residential areas for commercial activities, the court expressed displeasure that laws were not being implemented unless it told the authorities to do so.
