40 J&K quake orphans admitted to relief home

The first batch of 40 orphans of quake-hit Karnah tehsil in Jammu and Kashmir has been admitted to a relief home in Kupwara district.

The children were admitted to Happy Home on Thursday; it was set up by the state's Social Welfare Department. There are a total of 78 orphans identified in the area, an official spokesman said on Thursday.

The children would be provided free boarding, lodging and other basic necessities of life. The department is also training destitute women in various trades, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, N K Verma, Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, distributed relief cheques of Rs 72 lakhs to quake victims of Khoilun, Sheerpora, Shumlaram, Saterseera, Shoom of Chandoosa area and Sari Angan, Balhama, Humdhub and Burndhub of Rafiabad belt on Thursday, the spokesman added.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, B B Vyas reviewed the stock position of food grains, eatables and other essential commodities for the people of Tangdhar as the area remains cut off during the winter months.
