A man has landed behind bars after trying to mislead the court and get a non-bailable warrant against him cancelled, claiming that his wife was killed and his children injured in the recent Delhi blasts.

Metropolitan Magistrate Siddharth Sharma refused to cancel the warrant against accused Deepak Sharma because he tried to influence the court by lying that his wife had been killed in the October 29 Delhi blasts and that his two children were injured.

Sharma appeared before the court in the matter of his application, much after it was called on for hearing in the day, stating that his wife had died and his children were hospitalised after the blasts.

The application was for the cancellation of the warrant issued against Sharma for having failed to appear before the court.

On the court's direction that his claims should be verified, Sharma instantly retracted and confessed that he was lying, following which the court ordered his arrest and sent him to judicial custody.

Sharma, a resident of Bareilly in UP, is accused in the theft of a bag two years ago, belonging to a visiting civil servant at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

Dr Safeena A N, an IAS officer then posted in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, was in Delhi for a conference, when her bag was stolen. Some of the articles belonging to the lady were later allegedly found in Sharma's possession.
