The Congress has sent a letter to the secretary general of the United Nations requesting him to make available to it all relevant materials and documents.
The Congress made the request on the basis of adverse references made against it in the Volcker Committee report.
Party General Secretary Ambika Soni said the letter was sent on Sunday through a reputed law firm Amarchand Mangaldas.
Soni said that the party has taken this step in the light of its November 3 statement in which it had declared its resolve to do everything possible to clear the fair name and image of the party, sought to be sullied by the report.
Replying to queries, she disputed a suggestion that sending the letter was backtracking on the party's decision to send a comprehensive legal notice to the UN.
Congress had earlier said it would send a comprehensive legal notice to the United Nations and the Volcker Committee demanding full disclosure of the material on the basis of which the inquiry committee reached the 'unverified conclusion' that the party is a beneficiary in the Iraqi oil deal scam.
'Failing disclosure of the relevant material, the Congress party demands an unconditional apology for wrongly and maliciously making a reference to it,' the party had said.
