UP governor disqualifies MLA convicted for murder

In the first case of its kind, Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar in consultation with the Election Commission has disqualified a Samajwadi Party legislator following his conviction in a murder case.

A Raj Bhavan communique said on Friday that Uday Bhan Singh, Samajwadi Party MLA from Aurai constituency, has been disqualified under Section 8 (4) of the Representation of the People's Act, 1951, as he has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case.

The disqualification comes into effect from January 28, 2005, the day the High Court dismissed his appeal, the communique said.

The governor received a petition seeking Singh's disqualification on February 7.
