The Delhi police on Friday nabbed the 'prime suspect' Ajit (30) in the gangrape of a Delhi University student, official sources said.
Ajit was detained in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and was being brought to Delhi for interrogation, police sources said.
He would be produced in an identification parade before the 22-year-old victim before a formal arrest was announced, they added.
Police had earlier said that Ajit, wanted in many cases of burglary and auto-theft, was 'positively identified' by the woman from his photograph in a dossier.
The student was abducted near her house in south-west Delhi and raped in a moving car on Sunday.
Three of his accomplices are still missing, they added.
On Thursday, the police had released sketches of the accused based on the girl's descriptions.
In a fallout, the National Commission for Women summoned Police Commissioner K K Paul to discuss the security of women in the city.
