US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Affairs Christina Rocca arrived in Kathmandu Monday afternoon for a three-day "routine" visit.

Rocca who arrived after a brief stopover in New Delhi, told journalists at Tribhuvan International Airport she was looking forward to the meetings with senior Nepali government officials and political party leaders.

Officials said she is also scheduled to call on King Gyanendra, whose lifting of the state of emergency April 29 was welcomed the United States. However, Washington said it is still reviewing its proposed shipment of non-lethal military aid to Nepal scheduled for later this month.

A day earlier, Nepal's seven major opposition parties resolved to unite in protest against the royal takeover. Their joint charter of demands includes restoration of the lower house of parliament and the formation of an all-party, interim government to negotiate with the Maoist insurgents.
