The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday questioned the "motive" of L V Saptrishi, special observer in Bihar during Lok Sabha elections, in accusing election commissioners B B Tandon and N Gopalaswamy of trying to countermand Lok Sabha polls in Chapra.
"The elections took place a year ago and he is raising the issue now. He should have done it there and then. Why was he silent for one year, how the letter came out into the open and how has it reached Lalu? This raises questions on his motive," BJP vice-president S K Modi said.
"He has done it either at someone's direction or due to jealousy or departmental rivalry," he said.
Pattali Makkal Katchi demanded an inquiry into the complaint.
PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, in a statement, said if the allegations were true, the two ECs should be removed from the commission in order to create faith among the public in the commission.
Saptrishi, who was the special EC observer for Bihar in charge of all the 40 constituencies, in his letter to Union Law Minister H R Bhardwaj said that although nothing extraordinary or abnormal happened at Chapra, every attempt was made by Tandon and Gopalaswamy to countermand the poll after listening to the unreasonable demands of Lal Kishenchand Advani (the then Home Minister), Rudy and others.
The letter said when Saptrishi reached Delhi after the polls the two election commissioners told him that they wanted to "teach Lalu and all Yadavs a lesson as no Yadav can be trusted."
