No tsunami risk for India: S&T Secy.

There is no tsunami risk to India due to the earthquake that rocked the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra on Monday, a senior Indian official told rediff.com.

Science and Technology Secretary V Ramamurthy said since the earthquake was under the seabed, the risk of tsunami could not be eliminated initially.

"But now, we have enquired at our centres in Andaman & Nicobar," he said. "Sea conditions off Indian shores are normal. As two hours have passed, we can safely say that there is no risk of tsunami."

The earhquake, of magnitude 8.2 on the Richter scale, rocked Sumatra at 2130 IST.
