The Centre has activated its Disaster Management Team after a massive earthquake near Sumatra Islands of Indonesia on Monday night.

"Home Ministry's Disaster Management Team is in place," Prime Minister's Office spokesman Sanjaya Baru told PTI in New Delhi.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has spoken to Andaman and Nicobar Island Lt Governor Ram Kapse," he said, adding all the chief secretaries of the coastal states have been contacted.

Baru said mild tremors were recorded in Katchall island in the Nicobar group of islands.

"There has been no rise in sea level so far," Baru said adding the Centre was monitoring the situation across the country.

Home ministry secretary Dhirendra Singh, who heads the Crisis Management Group, is already in the control room, where the situation will be monitored all through the night.

Top officials of the Met Department were working to find out whether the quake could trigger a tsunami, official sources said.
