The Congress on Tuesday said it will take disciplinary action against its Kerala unit members who organised a series of rallies defying a directive from the high command.
The action will be taken in a day or two, official sources said.
What happened at Monday's 'I' faction rally in Kochi, led by senior leader K Karunakaran, was 'indiscipline,' Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, told reporters in New Delhi.
Patel noted that Karunakaran and his son and suspended former Pradesh Congress Committee chief K Muraleedharan had 'attacked' the Congress government in Kerala.
All India Congress Committee general secretary Ambika Soni said, "Discipline is important to strengthen the party."
Meanwhile, senior leader K V Thomas, who had been negotiating a peace deal on behalf of Congress Working Committee member A K Antony, met Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday and favoured the initiation of disciplinary action against dissident leaders in the state.
"Muraleedharan is talking about tactical adjustment with the Marxists. He is sowing the seeds of discord in the organisation. They mounted a scathing attack on the chief minister and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee," he said.
Karunakaran wants Chief Minister Oomen Chandy replaced. The leader is trying to carve a place for himself within the Congress hierarchy.
