US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited the Humanyun Tomb in Nizamuddin East, near New Delhi.
She went to the world heritage site after a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh at the Hyderabad House.
She spent around 20 minutes at the site, which is a five-minute drive from Hyderabad House.
The US envoy to New Delhi, David C Mulford, and a host of other American officials accompanied her.
Though she posed for pictures, the secretary of state did not take any questions from journalists. 'Very supportive' was all that she said when a journalist asked her about the US' stand on Indo-Pak ties.
Later, Dr Niveta Jafa, who showed Dr Rice around the monument, said of her: "She was able to get the best out of this building, which is peace.
"She is very sensitive and perceptive. She stood in front of the tomb with her eyes shut," Dr Jafa added.
