One person was killed and at least 27 injured, six of them critically, in a massive explosion in Rajouri town, south of Srinagar, on Wednesday afternoon.

A police officer said a powerful explosive device went off near a sweetmeat shop in downtown Rajouri. The injured were taken to a local hospital.

When this report was filed, arrangements were being made to airlift the critically injured to Jammu for specialised treatment.

Senior police and army officers have rushed to the spot.
