Pratapsinh Rane will be the next chief minister of Goa. He will be sworn in on Tuesday at the Raj Bhavan in Panaji.

Following the Congress Legislature Party meeting in Panaji, where Rane was chosen the leader, All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva said the party would stake its claim to form the government in the evening.

The two-member Nationalist Congress Party and one-member Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party will support the Congress-led government.

Pratapsinh RaneThis will end the three-month long President's rule in the state.

The 40-member assembly was placed under suspended animation early in March.

The resignation of five members of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the House and the withdrawal of support by its allies had led to the collapse of the Manohar Parrikar's BJP government.

Though Rane was then installed as the chief minister of the Congress-led alliance, he had failed to muster a majority on the floor of the House.

The by-elections have, however, added three MLAs to the Congress kitty.

The Congress now has 18 members in the House. It also enjoys the support of two NCP and one MGP legislators.
