Hundreds of people in Mumbra township in the Thane district on Saturday resorted to a rasta roko agitation on the Thane-Mumbra road to protest against the civic body, which failed to clear the sludge in the area following the flood.
Large numbers of women and children came out on the street and blocked the traffic at 9 am, police sources said.
The situation worsened when one of the policemen in plain clothes allegedly manhandled a woman protestor, who had
blocked the way of two wheelers driven by policemen.
The incident led to tension in the city as an angry crowd started throwing stones at the vehicles on the road and the entire traffic on the road has presently come to a standstill.
