Congress president Sonia Gandhi and on Monday expressed deep shock over police excess in Gurgoan, where over 250 Honda factory workers were injured in a brutal lathi charge.
"The incident is shocking," she said and asked the Haryana government to take up immediate remedial measures and hold an impartial probe and punish the guilty.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also expressed his concern about the incident. The incident is likely to be raised in both houses of Parliament by opposition parties as well as the Left parties.
Gurudas Dasgupta, Communist Party of India member of parliament, who visited the spot, told rediff.com on phone that the incident was 'brutal, savage and beyond the comprehension of any civil society'.
He had been in touch with the Haryana government over this matter for last three months and had been urging the state government to settle the matter amicably, he said.
He refuted the claims of Haryana Industries Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala that the workers and the owners of Honda factory had reached an agreement and it was vested interests which had caused the unrest.
"Where was Surjewala when we tried to contact him? Was he there on the spot? I am going to raise this issue in Parliament tomorrow," he said.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who ordered a commissioner-level inquiry into the incident, visited the injured in the hospital late on Monday night.
George Fernandes, convenor of the National Democratic Alliance and a trade union leader, also condemned the incident and said that he has never witnessed such a brutal attack by the police force during his lifetime.
