The Bombay high court on Monday admitted an appeal of the Maharashtra government against the order of the Prevention Of Terrorism Act court, which had acquitted eight accused involved in the Ghatkopar blast in Mumbai.

The state has appealed against the acquittal of five of the accused -- prime accused Dr Abdul Mateen Basit, Mohammed Altaf, Imran Rehman Khan, Shaikh Mohammed Muzammil and Toufiq Hamid.

A blast had occurred in a city bus in suburban Ghatkopar on December 2, 2002, in which two persons were killed and 49 injured.

Special POTA Judge A P Bhangale had acquitted all the eight accused on June 11 as the prosecution failed to prove charges against them.
