Two legislators from Pune, one each from ruling and opposition parties, on Monday entered the Lower House wearing helmets to register their protest on the government's decision on compulsory use of helmet by two-wheeler riders in their city.

As soon as the proceedings began, Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar urged Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Girish Bapat and Congress legislator Chandrakant Chhajed to remove their helmets and said the government has taken note of their protest.

Bapat said the only objective of wearing the helmet was to attract attention of the state government on the problems faced by around 14 lakh two-wheeler riders in the city.

"Since, the state government has taken note of it, I would deposit my helmet to the state transport minister," he said.

Chhajed asked the state government to urge the Centre to bring an Act exempting the two-wheeler riders from using helmet.
