Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray on Sunday expelled veteran Narayan Rane from the party.
Rane announced his resignation as leader of opposition in the Maharashtra assembly on Saturday.
Announcing Rane's expulsion after a meeting of party legislators and office bearers, the Sena supremo said, "If Rane has any self-esteem left then he should also resign from his assembly seat because he was elected to the legislature on the Sena ticket."
The new leader of opposition in the state assembly would be announced later, he said.
