Eleven people were buried alive and five were reported missing in a landslide triggered by incessant rains and flash floods in Govindghat area of Chamoli district, Uttaranchal, on Friday.

The victims were sleeping in their shops when the landslide occurred, a government official said.

He said that pilgrimage to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib shrines was also disrupted.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the army have been called in for rescue operations.

A senior official said the situation was "still precarious" in the area and efforts were on to clear the debris so that the yatra could be resumed.

Six hotels and shops and more than 160 vehicles, which were parked in the area were buried under landslides.

The district administration has sounded an alert in the area but rescue operations were hampered by rough weather
conditions, he said.

The Badrinath yatra remained suspended for more than a month last year due to landslides and flash floods in
Chamoli district that left several people dead.
