The Tamil Nadu government is setting up coconut parks in Nagapattinam district in memory of those who died in the tsunami.

One coconut sapling will be planted in memory of each of the victims in the park, which will come up in all the 77 affected hamlets.

The government is supplying the saplings to the relatives of the dead, Rural Development Secretary Shantha Sheela Nair said.

Nair distributed the saplings at Seruthur village near Nagapattinam.

Though they have lost their loved ones, the relatives wanted memorials for the victims. They had requested the state government to build the memorial parks, she said.

Supriya Sahu, Additional Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, A D Baruah, Nagapattinam District Wildlife Warden and other officials distributed saplings in other parts of the district.
