Tsunami: India toll over 10,000 now

The official toll in the December 26 tsunami disaster in India has crossed the 10,000 mark and more than 5,500 people are still missing.

According to a status report released by the Union Home Ministry, the toll now stands at 10,012.

Tamil Nadu has been hardest hit with 7,941 deaths, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 1,205. Over 5,500 people are missing in Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The toll in Pondicherry is now 590 with another 82 missing. In Andhra Pradesh, 105 people have died and 11 are missing and Kerala has reported 171 deaths, the report said.

The Union government has convened an all-party meeting on Sunday to discuss relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in tsunami-affected areas.

Giving details of Indian causalities overseas, the report said seven Indian nationals died and 12 to 15 are missing in Sri Lanka. One Indian was killed in Maldives, three in Thailand and two in Indonesia.
